The most significant changes this year are the Silverado 2500HD’s longer wheelbase and new powerplants. The Silverado 2500HD gets a new standard 6.6-liter V8 engine that’s more potent than the outgoing standard block, which means there’s even more power for towing and hauling. The optional Duramax turbodiesel engine is now paired with a 10-speed autoptic transmission that replaces the previous six-speed automatic gearbox.

CNET wrote: “This is the pickup you pick up when you need to live the real-deal truck-stuff life, pulling horse trailers or assembling lumber to raise a whole barn. ... The 2020 Chevy Silverado HD has presence in spades. It's so freaking big that it can be seen across a parking lot relatively easily, not that this is an excuse to buy a truck larger than most San Francisco apartments.”

Buyers can get the 2020 Silverado 2500HD in one of five trim levels: Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ and High Country. The base powerplant is a 6.6-liter V8 that produces 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine is rated to tow up to 17,400 pounds.

All trim levels other than the Custom get an optional turbocharged 6.6-liter diesel V8 engine that’s good for 445 hp and an amazing 910 lb-ft of torque, joined to an Allison 10-speed automatic. This block allows the Silverado 2500HD to tow a class-leading 35,500 pounds.

Standard features on the base Silverado 2500HD Work Truck trim include a 7-inch touchscreen, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Custom trim comes similarly equipped as the Work Truck, with the addition of cruise control, larger wheels and more power accessories.

Move up to the LT, and you’ll get even more comfort and convenience equipment, such as cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, and heated and power-adjustable mirrors. The LTZ trim gets standard leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, power-folding mirrors, a seven-pin wiring harness with a trailer brake controller, and an upgraded 8-inch touchscreen.

The top-spec High Country comes with ventilated front seats, a spray-in bed liner, Bose premium audio and side assist steps. Most of the features that come standard on the upper trim levels are available on the other models as options.
